DJI Phantom 3 Standard

DJI Phantom 3 Standard Review

The drone Phantom 3 standard was released on August 2015 to fill the gap between Phantom 2 Vision+ and Phantom 3 Pro/Adv series. The ability to capture high quality videos/stills and the ease of control, are the main factors that every first-time pilot expects to get when it comes to choosing a drone. So far, Phantom 3 standard is said to be the best drone for beginners; for those who are willing to learn the dynamics of flying professional drones with less cost and headache from dealing with complicated aerial equipment. Needless to say, like other Phantom series, you’ll get an RTF (ready-to-fly) drone, all you need to do is to unbox and get the quad ready for flying in just a few minutes. In this review, you’ll learn about all the important details and features of Phantom 3 standard, moreover I explain the difference between Phantom 3 standard and other series.

Phantom 3 standard Specs And Features

Flight time: Up to 25 min

Diagonal Size: 350 mm

The fact is Phantom 3 Standard features are very similar to those of other Phantom 3 series in terms of both design and the use of technology . However sometimes a small change can make a difference. In Standard the motors are positioned upright, but in other Phantom 3 series you will notice this is not the case, in which they have tilted motors for better stability. Further in this review, you’ll find more interesting features and differences.

Phantom 3 Standard or Phantom 2 Vision+

As a potential buyer you may need to know what makes Phantom 3 Standard special in compare to Phantom 2 Vision+. They are both created for beginners & first-time pilots, First of all, if this is your first time flying a drone, you need much time to spend on learning, and the chances of crashing is not low. The price to buy Phantom 3 Standard is $800 and if you search on Amazon or on other websites you’ll notice the it is about $200 cheaper than Vision+. Besides the price, the Standard has 9% more flight duration, so if you need even more flight time, with the money saved, you can buy extra battery and Hardshell backpack by only adding about $260.

If your concern is also about the quality of FPV(First Person View), the good news is there are a few upgrades for Phantom 3 Standard. For instance, you’ll get a built-in WiFi video downlink with around 300m higher range. It transmits video at the bitrate of 2Mbps which is four times more than what you get from Vision+. The last but not least concern is the preview quality of FPV.  You’ll get HD 720P @ 30fps in compare to Vision+, which gives you SD 480P at 30fps.

Phantom 3 Standard or Phantom 3 Pro/Adv

With no  doubt, the first thing you’ll notice is the price, Phantom 3 Standard is about $300 cheaper than Advanced and $460 cheaper than Professional, but let’s check what will you actually miss with your saving.

In terms of flight duration and flight speed there is no difference. However Phantom Standard has just a bit higher flight time and less weight including battery and propellers. In the case of positioning module, Phantom Standard uses only GPS where as the Phantom Pro/Adv benefit from Russian GLONASS in addition to GPS. If you are curious to know, Glonass is an alternative GPS and together they provide faster and more reliable connections to satellite. On the other hand the ultrasonic sensor  is not added to Phantom 3 Standard which  is a great help for flying indoors and the places without proper access to GPS.

About the camera and the quality of videos, there is not much difference between Phantom Standard (2.7Kp and 1080p at 30fps) and Advanced (1080p at 60fps), if you are not familiar with technical aspects of capturing video, and how the amount of frames per second can affect the quality, then watch this video in below to get the idea.

Of course there is a different between 4k camera used in Phantom Pro and the one used in Standard, for that, you don’t even need to watch a video to catch the differences. The other concern is the filter ring. With Phantom 3 Pro/Adv you are able to attach the ND filter unlike Phantom Standard. The use of  ND filter helps reducing or modifying the intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally. At the end, for FPV enthusiasts, The Standard uses Wifi, so the live feed is not as good as what you get from DJI Lightbridge in other two series. With Standard you also get less transmission distance but the same bitrate as Advanced gets. However Phantom Professional transmits at the bitrate of 10Mbps which is 5 times higher.

The last words

The fact is whether you are a hobbyist or a professional photographer and its the first time you are searching and reading reviews to buy a drone, do not really be picky on the small details of equipment used on these drones. It is reasonable if you don’t have all the great features of high-end drones as you don’t want to risk wrecking all that technology when you’re still in the stage of learning. Phantom 3 Standard is a great starter before buying more equipped drones like Phantom 3 Professional or Inspire 1. With Phantom 3 standard you have ease of use,  high quality camera and FPV at reasonable price.
